Motors That No Longer Exist Have Been Rebuilt

In the kitchen, above the stove, is an exhaust fan that was connected via cloth-insulated wires. Yes, cloth. Probably not touched or cleaned since it was first installed in 1935. Originally, this may have been a very beautiful motor with a steel blade.

I took it to an old-fashioned hardware store and the experienced man behind the "electricity" counter said: "I haven't seen one of these in 30 years and I'm old enough to remember it." Okay.

Luckily, they had one similar model (the last one!) and he dusted it off and handed it to me. It was not cheap.

Now I had to find a blade. No metal blade of this size exists anymore, but I found a plastic 8-incher online that would fit the motor.

It took three weeks, but now it works like a jet engine. A jet engine that purrs.

  1. It's not really pink, folks. That's a camera flash on its last legs...
